Actions in Support of the People of Vieques

1. Organize events in your community and attend and support any other event calling for the US Navy to get out of Vieques.

2. Support the people of Vieques by organizing delegations from your community to visit the island. By doing this, you and your delegation will be able to better know its people and the terrible situation they face.

3. You can send much needed financial contributions to the Vieques anti-Navy organizations like the Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques, Box 1424, Vieques, PR 00765; e-mail: bieke@prdigital.com; telephone 787.741.8651. They also have films, stickers and T-shirts for fundraising. Get a bunch to sell in your community!

4. Donations of technical recourses, such as two-way radios, computer equipment, faxes, sound equipment, digital cameras and radio-modems are badly needed. Please write to: ViequesLibre@ViequesLibre.org if you have equipment to donate or if you are willing to help finance some of the communication projects that need to be implemented to strengthen the movement's infrastructure.

5. Call and write (fax) to White House officials and express your repudiation of the Navy's bombing of Vieques island. Demand that George W. Bush order the immediate withdrawal of the Navy. Please ask your colleagues in elected office, in the leadership of political parties, churches, community organizations, etc., to do the same.

6. If you live outside the United States, you can contact the US embassy and ask them why is the US violating basic human rights in Vieques. Demand the Navy's immediate withdrawal from the island. Organize protest activities in front of the Embassy or other US facilities.

7. Volunteer your time and skills to the movement. Translators are needed for many different languages. If you want to volunteer write to: ViequesLibre@ViequesLibre.org.

8. Organize public debates, talks and forums about the topic. You may want to invite Viequenses or activists to participate.

9. Write letters to newspapers and magazines. Express your opinions and ask them to cover the human right's side of the story. Call and write to TV stations to have them cover the story in a complete way.

10. Call radio talk-shows to publicly express your concern about what is happening in Vieques. Use the airtime to call upon politicians to use all their political power to evict the Navy from Vieques.

11. Distribute information in your workplace and community. You can either produce your own leaflets or brochures, or you can contact existing organizations to provide you with their most recent literature. You can also use any content and image from ViequesLibre.org. Visit the webpage often for updates.

12. Organize against the Navy's current ongoing campaign to recruit Latinos and other minorities. Distribute information on military recruitment centers to persuade them not to join.

13. Use your creativity: Implement whatever initiative you believe might strengthen the cause. Inform others through phone, fax, e-mail and through ViequesLibre.org.

14. Subscribe to our e-mail list to receive news and updates by sending an e-mail to ViequesLibre-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
