Dear Mr. President: As you are aware, the U.S. Navy has announced that it will resume bombing on the island of Vieques, once again disregarding the will of the people. Please understand that the people of Puerto Rico are resolute in demanding that the US Navy immediately and permanently cease and desist all military activities in Vieques. The merits of these demands have been proven beyond a reasonable doubt and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico has endorsed said demands as public policy. Governor Sila Calederón and the Mayor of Vieques, Dámaso Serrano, among many other elected officials, and leaders of the civic and religious sectors, oppose any further bombing on Vieques. It would be patently anti-democratic and unfair to allow further bombings despite the absolute and reasoned opposition of the people and its elected representatives. We understand that the Navy must leave Vieques immediately and are confident that you will take the necessary steps to ensure that no more bombs, of any kind, are going to be fired on Vieques, an island that has borne too heavy a burden for too long.
Respectfully,
